The Maine Winters can be brutal, especially along the coast. Constructed in 1858, the Bass Harbor lighthouse has seen many a stromy Winter. This painting was done as a tribute to the lighthouse keepers who wheathered these stroms to keep the mariners safe from the cragy coastal rocks. The light served to warn mariners of the Bass Harbor Bar at the eastern entrance to Bass Harbor, and also to mark the southeast entrance to Blue Hill Bay. The first keeper was John Thurston. The brick lighthouse is attached to the 1 1/2-story wood-frame keeper's house by a covered walkway. An 1,800 gallon cistern in the dwelling's cellar collected rainwater for the use of the keepers. Today it is owned and operated by the Coast Guard.
